10 Things Movies Make Too Easy, According To Reddit

0

With Avatar: The Way of the Water gearing up for a December 16 release, fans are more than ready to return to a franchise with unparalleled visual effects. Still, one major difference with this new iteration is that the effects will only get better as viewers spend most of their time looking at an underwater world.

While the film will surely play on the difficulties of living and fighting underwater, many films underestimate their premise. After all, depicting a scientifically accurate underwater civilization would be nearly impossible, and it should feel a lot more difficult to manage than the current movies make it out to be. Unfortunately, there are a lot of things that movies seem too easy.

VIDEO OF THE DAY

Solve Crimes

movies like The Batman may lean into detective work, but they still underestimate how difficult it can be to take fingerprints or find DNA evidence. This Reddit user complains about “the way crime labs apparently solve crimes with DNA testing and unrestricted access to every camera in every building in town.”

The best crime fiction films often feature detectives making connections easily, connecting two unrelated subjects to find an author. Crime labs don’t have endless resources and finding connections between suspects and crimes can be difficult, which is why many crimes go unsolved.

Survive on alien planets

It’s not uncommon in movies like Interstellar for humans to settle on an alien planet and struggle to survive the trash. Yet while they often describe their problems, Reddit user SleepyMage complains that “the only thing to worry about in space movies is whether a planet has oxygen or not.” .

Even when Interstellar lip service to the idea that gravity is stronger on alien planets, they should have struggled a lot harder after so long in space. Food, water, and psychological implications should also have come into play, along with concerns about bacteria and foreign diseases.

Lifting a manhole cover

Ash and Kristofferson climb through a manhole in Fantastic Mr Fox.

In movies like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, it can be easy for characters to just push a manhole cover and climb out of a sewer. Even movies like Delighted frame it as a minor event, though lifting a manhole cover is an incredible feat of strength that the movies rarely acknowledge.

“People coming out of a sewer system in the middle of the street with the manhole cover easily pushed aside,” is unrealistic, according to Reddit user p38-lightning. “These cursed things are heavy.“Even the most powerful characters in the MCU should struggle with them, given that they’re specifically designed to be too heavy to lift.

Conduct

Kurt Russell driving a car in Death Proof

Driving in movies seems like the easiest thing in the world. Movie characters like 2 Fast 2 Furious can sit down and have a full conversation without looking at the road without worry. Reddit user Llamathrust even argues about “having a steady conversation without wind or car noise, especially if something happened to the windows/doors like in some action movies.”

Yet what even the best motor racing movies fail to acknowledge is that driving is tough and requires concentration. The characters can’t direct their attention to the wrong place, otherwise they could easily have accidents. To make matters worse, trying to have a conversation can often be difficult, especially when the driver is focused on the road.

Piracy

When you look at Wargames, it can be easy to assume that hacking is downright easy. After all, “computers are basically the new deus ex machina…I cross-referenced the license plate with the average rainfall in each region,” the Reddit user says nowhere here, “so the killer is probably within that three-block radius.”

In reality, piracy has nothing to do with the movies that portray it. It’s a task that often involves weeks of hard work and brute force, which can lead to many sleepless nights. It can also involve spreadsheets, tabs full of data, and hours of dedicated work that can leave hackers incredibly stressed. It’s not as simple as plugging in a code or two and running a system check. Moreover, even in War gameswhich is pretty accurate, the implication that no one is checking to see if the notes or data has been changed is pretty ridiculous.

Fleeing from the explosions

movies like Iron Man and Impossible mission include epic explosion scenes featuring characters calmly walking or jogging away from an explosion. “Apparently you only have to worry about the flame and the impact of the concussion is really minimal,” says Reddit user bootorangutan.

Of course, the reality is that trying to escape an explosion would be much more difficult. Even if the characters managed to avoid the explosion of flames, they would still be thrown forward by the force of the explosion. Ear injuries are also said to be common solely from the sounds of the explosion. Also, given how slow humans run, it’s much harder to escape explosions in real life.

Joe Pesci and Marisa Tomei at the helm in My Cousin Vinny

It’s not uncommon for great movies like My cousin Viny to present courtroom scenes that make working as a lawyer a breeze. The trials are quick and engaging, and the jurors are as engaged in the unfolding of history as anyone else in the audience.

“The thing is, trials tend to be pretty boring and slow-paced in reality,” says Reddit user mikenmar. “And they rarely have the kind of dramatic moments depicted in the movies.” In reality, the bureaucracy lawyers have to go through and some pretty ridiculous trial rules, navigating the court system is harder than it looks.

Struggle

Black Panther fighting Captain America

Superhero movies like Captain America: The First Avenger make the fights feel like a genuinely fun experience where even inexperienced fighters can last a long time and suffer no long term effects afterwards. While lean Steve Rogers always loses fights, he can always get back up regardless.

In reality, “a fight is EXHAUSTING and almost always goes to the ground,” says Redditor soapdonkey. Even the strongest martial arts fighters will be tired after a long fight and many can still be shaken if they’ve taken a hit to the head along the way. Also, learning to fight isn’t as simple as the montages show. It takes years of hard work and dedication. Real people can’t just take a serum and become great fighters.

Lock picking

A hook from Resident Evil 3

Often movies like Terminator 2 can feature characters like Sarah Connor picking a lock with nothing more than a toothpick, hair clip, or even just a paper clip. In reality, the process of picking a lock involves training, experience, and the right tools.

“Pick picking is generally ridiculously bad. No one ever applies tension or uses the right tools,” says Reddit user 77ZZ77ZZ7. While this is most prevalent in video games, where lock picking is ridiculously easy, movies present the same problem. Many scriptwriters just don’t know how difficult it can be, because all they know is how hard the characters have to pick locks.

To play an instrument

Jack Black plays guitar at School of Rock

Playing an instrument is something many viewers will already know how to do, but the characters certainly don’t. When they pick up an instrument, “they’re holding it upside down, wrong side, hands don’t even come close to being on the right keys/holes. Horrible fake bowing on the strings and terrible fake guitar strumming. Be able to learn an instrument instantly, etc.,” says a Reddit user.

In reality, it takes years of training to learn how to master an instrument. Movies about fictional musicians often don’t want to portray the long days of hard work and dedication it takes. school of rock features students beginning to learn their instruments, but it doesn’t show the historical progression of skill development, and it certainly doesn’t show the tough practice nights at home, as each character struggles with difficult chords and the process learning to read notes on green light.
