die hard has captured the attention and fanfare of audiences around the world since 1988. Not only is there everlasting debate surrounding the film as a holiday flick, it’s considered one of our best action thrillers. era. Bruce Willis plays John McClane, a detective who finds himself trapped in an office building with terrorists holding hostages: including his wife.
The concept alone with the high stakes is a great archetype for a story and one that many movies and video games have tried to replicate. Ultimately, some games come out on top with their unique spin on die hard.
ten DOOM: eternal
A Slayer and a few hundred thousand demons enter a bar. Players know how this one goes. idSoftware 2020 LOSS Game, Eternal DOOM features the titular Doom Slayer (or Doom Guy), as he battles the armies of Hell alone. Although on the surface the Doom Slayer and John McClane have nothing in common, the action speaks for itself.
As the Doom Slayer, players are tasked with stopping an invasion and preventing humans from being killed or blowing up their buildings. If this sounds familiar, then it’s basically die hardexcept there’s a plethora of fast action, gore and demons to rip and hopefully more titles on the way.
9 Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
Every movie, TV show, or video game has higher stakes in the sequels. This is true for die hardand this is especially true for Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. The game even opens with a climactic spectacle of the player climbing a wrecked train hanging from a cliff amidst snow-capped mountains. It’s a great narrative introduction, but there are some criticisms of the series’ narrative structure.
Nathan Drake and John McClain are quite similar protagonists. Both can be clumsy, overwhelmed, and witty when they feel like it. Nate’s humor when conversing with the villainous Lazarević bears a strong resemblance to McClain’s own interactions with Hans Gruber. Not to mention the gameplay, which has Nate alone, and battling hordes of mercenaries.
8 Far Cry 5
The fifth main part of Far cry ubisoft franchise, Far Cry 5 finally takes players somewhere less exotic. Players are taken home to America. The protagonist is involved in law enforcement as a junior deputy and soon becomes directly involved in a plot to take over America from religious cultists.
What makes the game similar to die hard is the aspect of a man against a group of terrorists. The protagonist, and therefore the player, must use every tool at their disposal to take down this hostile group and show them what America stands for, while the guns are blazing. Or, go the stealthy route.
seven Wolfenstein: The New Order
A man who seeks to recover what he loves from the Germans. Think about die hard? Think again. Wolfenstein: The New Order was the action-adventure first-person shooter developed by MachineGames. This title brought Wolfenstein back into the mainstream and had a blast doing it.
As BJ Blazkowicz, players must escape from an asylum under German occupation. This game takes place after the war, in which the Nazis won. It’s another ‘one man against the world’ type deal, and the stakes are higher than ever as the player fights against fascism.
The action-adventure game developed by Remedy Entertainment is more inspired by David Lynch than it is die hard, but that doesn’t stop the two from having a similar plot. With Control, players enter the mind of protagonist Jesse Faden. She finds herself as the new director of the Federal Bureau of Control, but in a completely empty building.
In the FBC building, players will have to use supernatural abilities and weapons to eliminate the hostile invasion of the supernatural hiss. It’s a big mystery, filled with side quests and interesting characters. However, a protagonist who deals with hostiles one floor at a time is very die hard, and certainly, a game worth playing, especially if you’re an AT&T customer.
Although this game lacks many of the basic attributes one would associate with die hard. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater can still be considered basically Die Hard due to the unfolding events. The game lacks the iconic Nakatomi Plaza, given that it’s set in the Cold War-era Soviet Union.
As Naked Snake, players must navigate jungles and Soviet-run facilities to infiltrate and rescue a weapons designer and sabotage an experimental weapons operation that could threaten the world. Stakes higher than die hardbut similar.
4 Resident Evil 2 (Remake)
As a deadly virus brings the people of Raccoon City under the catastrophic thumb of death, Resident Evil 2 seeks to tell two stories. For Die Hard themes, this entry will be more reserved for Leon than Claire.
As a new cop, Leon arrives at an empty police station and soon finds himself biting off more than he can chew. The same cannot be said for the zombie horde. Leon must use his wits and brawn to fight and solve the mystery that has plagued Raccoon City in literal hell, but like McClain, the hunter can become the hunted. The terrifying Mister X will hunt you down through the police station.
Another title to present hidden and crawling in the vents is Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Freedom. The protagonist, Raiden, is sent to an offshore cleaning facility, Big Shell. The protagonist has to sneak around and try to stop the terrorist plot.
What does this game look like die hard is the use of stealth and the threat of hostages used to achieve the terrorist’s objective. To make the stakes even higher, the President of the United States is aboard Big Shell, which means Raiden must use his tactical spy training wisely, to save everyone.
2 half life
Often considered by gamers to be one of the best first-person shooters of all time, the original half life developed and published by Valve is another title similar to that of die hard. The protagonist, Gordon Freeman, is completely silent, but it’s the actions of the game that make him similar.
Freeman must navigate through puzzle and shooter segments in the Black Mesa facility, which has been overrun by monsters as well as the military. It’s a one-man war as Freeman desperately tries to get to safety, and like McClaine, he also uses vents. Hopefully, as die hard, half life will receive a third entry.
1 Batman: Arkham Asylum
John McClane and Batman don’t really have much in common. The first is always wise and can sometimes grope. While Batman is serious and tough. Their similarities seem to come into play in that they are both detectives and both spend an unusual amount of time in the air vents.
Within Rocksteady Batman: Arkham Asylum, Batman finds himself trapped in Arkham Asylum, with the iconic villain, the Joker, freeing all the inmates to drive the madhouse, truly, insane. The concept is very similar die hard, with the protagonist trapped in a hostage situation with criminals. Except this protagonist has a cape and pointy ears and is fighting a clown rather than Alan Rickman.
